In a bold move ahead of the FIFA U-17 World Cup qualifiers, Uganda’s national women’s football team coach, Sheryl Botes, has roped in England-based star Bethany Kaluya to fortify the defense. Kaluya, who showcases her skills with Brighton and Hove Albion Ladies FC, is set to join the provisional squad as they gear up for a challenging face-off against Zambia.
The Teen Cranes, fresh from their triumphant elimination of Cameroon, are scheduled to clash with the Zambian squad in a crucial two-legged Third Round qualifier. The matches are lined up for May 12 in Lusaka and May 17 in Kampala, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling showdown.
South African tactician Botes is confident that Kaluya’s addition will provide a much-needed boost against Zambia’s formidable attack. The team is set to start their intensive preparation on April 28, entering a residential camp at the Cranes Paradise Hotel in Kisasi.
A victory over Zambia would propel the Ugandan squad into the final qualification phase against either Morocco or Algeria, inching them closer to a spot in the prestigious tournament.
The provisional squad brims with talent, featuring goalkeepers Lillian Nakilya and Angella Adeke, alongside a robust lineup of defenders including Faridah Namirimu and Charity Katusiime. The midfield is anchored by Esther Nangendo and Vanessa Namazzi, with Sylvia Kabene and Agnes Nabukenya leading the charge as strikers.
