KAMPALA: The Government of Uganda and the Albertine Graben Energy Consortium (AGEC) are pleased to announce significant progress in the development of the 60,000 barrels per day Oil Refinery Project in Uganda. Several key milestones have been achieved, laying a solid foundation for the successful implementation of this crucial venture.
To date, the Refinery Configuration, also known as Front-End Loading 2 (FEL-2), has been completed, providing a comprehensive blueprint for the project. This includes the completion of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED), which defines the technical specifications and requirements of the Oil Refinery. Furthermore, an exhaustive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) study, logistics study, and commercial and marketing study have been conducted, ensuring that the project adheres to the highest environmental and social standards while also exploring viable commercial opportunities, a July 3 statement from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, said.
While significant strides have been made, there are still outstanding aspects that require attention. The mobilization of financing for the project remains a priority, and the Government of Uganda is actively seeking offers from public sector capital providers to participate in this nationally and regionally strategic project. This presents an exciting opportunity for public sector entities to contribute to the development and growth of the oil refinery, thereby fostering economic prosperity and energy security in the region, according to the statement.
The development of the Oil Refinery in Uganda is a critical undertaking that holds immense potential for the country’s economic transformation. It is anticipated that the refinery will have a production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, significantly enhancing Uganda’s self-reliance in the oil sector and reducing its dependence on imported petroleum products.
The Government of Uganda, in partnership with the Albertine Graben Energy Consortium, remains steadfast in its commitment to realizing this ambitious project. Through collaborative efforts, we aim to harness the full potential of Uganda’s oil resources, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth for the benefit of our citizens and the wider region.
