April 25: Gaddafi vs SC Villa

The final stretch of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League promises to be highly competitive as four teams — Kitara FC, BUL FC, and SC Villa — vie to dethrone the defending champions, Vipers, in what is shaping up to be one of the most closely contested title races in recent years in local football.

With just six games remaining for each of the title contenders, fans will be on the edge of their seats in the upcoming weeks. The league recommences on Tuesday, April 16, following the conclusion of the Stanbic Uganda Cup quarterfinals, scheduled to wrap up on Sunday, April 14.

The four-way title battle was ignited by a deadlock between SC Villa and Vipers SC on April 9 at the Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku. Their goalless draw has thrown the title race wide open, with defending champions Vipers currently sitting in third place after amassing 42 points from 22 games. On the other hand, SC Villa, the record 16-time Uganda league champions, has moved to the fourth position with 41 points from the same number of games.

Leading the 16-team table standings is Kitara FC, considered underdogs at the start of the season, with 44 points from 23 games, closely followed by BUL FC on 43 points from the same number of matches played. This means that the top four teams are separated by just a single point, setting the stage for an intense title race.

While SC Villa and Vipers are no strangers to the spotlight, having clinched multiple league titles in the past, the same cannot be said for Kitara FC and BUL FC, both aiming to secure their first-ever top-flight accolade.

Kitara FC: Making their debut in the elite division this season, Kitara has emerged as the surprise package, currently leading the table standings. Based in Masindi, the team has defied expectations with consistent performances that have kept them at the summit for several weeks. Star players like Denis Omedi (11 goals), Jude Ssemugabi (6 goals), Living Kabon (5 goals), and veteran Paul Mucurezi (4 goals) have been instrumental in Kitara’s ascent to the top.

BUL FC: Holding the second spot, BUL has experienced fluctuations in form throughout the season. Although they enjoyed a spell at the top of the table during the first round, the Jinja-based team faced setbacks due to a dip in form and injuries at the beginning of the second round. Unlike Kitara, BUL has been in the top division for three seasons and boasts more experience at this level, highlighted by their Uganda Cup success in 2022. Leading marksman Alex Kitata, with 10 goals to his name, has played a crucial role in keeping BUL in contention for their inaugural league title.

Against this backdrop, some pundits liken Kitara and BUL to the Biblical ‘Davids’ in this title race, challenging the established ‘Goliaths’ represented by Vipers and SC Villa.
