Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has released the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results for the year 2022.
The results were released by minister of education and sports Hon. Janet Museveni on January 27th, 2023.
832, 654 candidates sat for the 2022 PLE exams and 714,792 of these passed and qualify to join secondary schools. 114,617 passed with division one.
Dan Odongo, the executive secretary UNEB noted that the performance of students in urban centers was better than that of their counterparts in rular areas. Similarly, private schools performed better than UPE schools.
“The candidates of the non UPE performed better as has always been the case. Their numbers are small, but if you’re looking at it proportionally in terms of percentages, then you can say they have performed better than the UPE candidates,” he said.
Odongo also noted that teachers in urban centers use better teaching methods than those in rural areas, explaining why urban students performed better.
“The teachers also tend to adopt teaching methods that emphasize preparation for test taking. There is a higher level of involvement also of the urban parents in their children’s learning process and the urban areas generally tend to have better access to those facilities that supplement classroom teaching. So these are the reasons that we think would be explaining the reason why there is a better performance being shown by the Urban candidates,”he noted.
Speaking at the release of the 2022 PLE Results, Janet Museveni cautioned teachers that involve themselves in examination malpractice to stop the vice or risk being arrested.
Janet Museveni also urged schools to adhere to the ministry of education and sports’ guidelines on fees. Janet says parents are financially struggling and schools should cooperate with ministry to bail them out.
The selection exercise for the PLE students will be done on February 2nd and 3rd and they are expected to commence school on February 20th, 2023.
