Kevin Ainomugisha, a 4th-year law student at Uganda Christian University, is rewriting the rules of success. Not content with just pursuing a legal career, Kevin has carved out a niche for himself as the proprietor of A.K Fashion House, a brand celebrated for its elegant suits, accessories, and shoes. This dual-career dynamo recently made waves in the fashion industry by winning the prestigious African Designer of the Year award at the OSFAS Awards on May 8, 2024. His inspiring journey, blending law and high fashion, is a testament to creativity, passion, and perseverance. Here’s what he had to share in an exclusive interview.
Congratulations! How does it feel to win the prestigious OSFAS Award?
Thank you! Honestly, I’m on cloud nine. It’s an incredible moment of pride and joy for the entire A.K Fashion House family. Winning this award is more than a milestone; it’s a validation of the hard work, creativity, and passion that drives us every day.
What does this award mean to you and A.K Fashion House?
It’s a huge honor. For me, it reflects the love and support of our community of fashion lovers and the dedication of my amazing team. From the start, we’ve aimed to create designs that inspire confidence and tell meaningful stories. Winning this award affirms our mission and fuels our ambition to keep innovating. It’s a result of countless late nights, fittings, and revisions — every piece has my heart and soul in it.
I also want to give special thanks to our collaborators, models, and photographers. They’ve been instrumental in bringing our vision to life.
What sparked your interest in fashion, and how did you transition from law to design?
Fashion has always been my true passion. I love creative expression, and design allows me to tell stories and make an impact in ways that feel authentic. While I respect the discipline of law, I realized I thrive in a more creative environment. Transitioning to fashion gave me a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Have you faced skepticism as a law student turned fashion designer?
Oh yes, plenty! People found it odd at first — a lawyer breaking the Advocates’ professional dress code? But over time, they adjusted. It wasn’t easy, but I stayed true to myself and my vision.
How did your family react to your career shift?
They weren’t surprised at all. I’ve always loved clothes. As a kid, I used to cut up new outfits just to figure out how they were made — I even have a scar from using a razor blade. Once, I tore apart my dad’s Christmas suit to study its construction! So, for them, this wasn’t new.
Have your law studies helped in your fashion career?
Surprisingly, yes. Law school taught me discipline, critical thinking, and attention to detail. These skills are invaluable in fashion, especially when dealing with clients, contracts, and running a business.
Do you have any favorite designers or inspirations?
My style is unique, but I do draw inspiration from ancient stylists like Charles Le Brun and Belly Baldwin. Nature also inspires me a lot — it’s full of beauty and creativity.
What’s your favorite type of clothing to design?
Definitely haute couture. It allows me to fully express my creativity and create bold, one-of-a-kind pieces.
How do you handle criticism of your designs?
Criticism is part of being a creative. You have to take risks, and sometimes it doesn’t work out. Negative feedback pushes me to improve and gain the trust of critics.
What’s next for A.K Fashion House?
We’re just getting started! Winning this award has inspired me to dream even bigger. While in Accra, I exchanged ideas with other African designers, and I’m excited about what’s coming next. Expect bold new collections soon!
What advice would you give to young people pursuing fashion design?
Be patient, take baby steps, and let your brand grow organically. Above all, be passionate about style. When you’re passionate, it doesn’t feel like work — it becomes a source of joy. For me, designing helps me de-stress from law school.
