KAMPALA: Nakajjubi Robinnah had once resigned herself to the idea that becoming an electrical installation technician was beyond her reach. However, her journey from a hopeful student to a skilled tradeswoman exemplifies the power of determination, community support, and the transformative potential of educational opportunities.
Nakajjubi’s path toward a career in electrical installation began in Wandegeya, where she studied at Datamine Technical Business School. Like many young Ugandans, she faced significant financial challenges that threatened to derail her educational aspirations. After completing her O’level exams, she found herself at home, unable to continue her studies due to a lack of resources. Despite these setbacks, her dream of becoming an electrician persisted.
Her breakthrough came from an unexpected source—her grandmother. One day, her grandmother received a WhatsApp message with a link to the KCB GIZ Twekozese programme. This program offered Nakajjubi a lifeline, providing her with the opportunity to pursue her passion for electrical installation. Without hesitation, she applied and anxiously awaited the outcome, viewing this opportunity as her chance to achieve her dreams. When she received a call from the KCB Foundation team confirming her selection, her joy was overwhelming—her dream was finally within reach.
Through the KCB Twekozese programme, Nakajjubi gained a range of practical skills essential for an electrician. “I can wire sockets, cable trays, trunking, and much more,” she proudly shares. These skills have enabled her to excel in her trade and empowered her to earn an income and support her household.
“I can make my own money, buy food for the home,” she reflects, highlighting the independence and stability that her new profession has brought into her life. Yet, Nakajjubi’s ambition does not end here. She is determined to further her education and earn a diploma, although financial constraints remain challenging. Nonetheless, she remains hopeful and committed to continuing her studies.
Nakajjubi expresses immense gratitude toward KCB Bank for the opportunity that changed her life. “I thank KCB so much for this opportunity. It did not leave me the same,” she says with heartfelt appreciation. The program has not only transformed her life but has also inspired her to encourage other young people to seize similar opportunities when they arise.
Her message to her peers is clear: “I encourage fellow youth to enroll once an opportunity shows up.” Nakajjubi’s story serves as a powerful reminder of how educational programs and community support can transform lives, enabling young people to achieve their dreams and positively contribute to their communities.
In 2023, KCB Bank Uganda and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) graduated a total of 2,055 beneficiaries of the KCB-GIZ Twekozese Programme, further enhancing Uganda’s skilled human capital. The graduates were trained in various trades, including masonry, carpentry, plumbing, welding, and electrical installation, contributing to the development of a more skilled workforce in the country.
