KAMPALA, March 15, 2025 – Hoima City Stadium, one of Uganda’s flagship projects for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has reached a major milestone in its construction. The Ministry of Works and Transport has confirmed that the project is on track, with the recent arrival of steel trusses for roofing signaling a transition to the next phase of development.
Under the supervision of Turkish construction firm SUMMA, work at the site is progressing around the clock, with two shifts extending until 1 a.m. to ensure timely completion. Sources on the ground report that overall construction stands at 22%, with concrete works expected to be completed by April 2025. The arrival of roofing materials this month is a significant step, reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to delivering a world-class sports facility ahead of the continental tournament.
A Stadium Set to Transform Ugandan Football
Scheduled for completion by December 2025, Hoima City Stadium will boast a 20,000-seat capacity, top-tier training facilities, a 2,000-capacity indoor arena, and state-of-the-art amenities designed to meet international standards. Beyond AFCON 2027, the stadium is expected to become a multi-purpose sports hub, hosting football matches, athletics, and other major events.
For the 500,000 residents of Hoima and the surrounding areas, this project represents more than just a sporting venue—it is a symbol of progress. “This is a dream come true for Ugandan football. I can finally see AFCON happening on our home soil in a brand-new stadium,” said an elated Moses Mbabazi, a student at Makerere University and native of Hoima district.
Another fan, Sharon Namutebi, shared her excitement: “Seeing the stadium take shape makes me proud as a Ugandan. In the future, we could be on par with countries like Morocco and South Africa when it comes to sports infrastructure. This will not only boost football but also put Hoima on the continental map,” she said.
Uganda’s Commitment to Hosting AFCON 2027
Hoima City Stadium was among the key venues proposed by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) during the AFCON 2027 bidding process. Other proposed match venues include Mandela National Stadium (Namboole), Buhinga Stadium in Fort Portal, and Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira. Training grounds will include Kampala International School (KISU), Nakivubo Stadium, Muteesa II Stadium (Wankulukuku), and St. Mary’s Stadium (Kitende).
Uganda, alongside Kenya and Tanzania, secured the rights to host AFCON 2027 under the PAMOJA bid, triumphing over strong competition from Algeria, Egypt, Botswana, Senegal, and Nigeria. The tournament will mark a historic moment for East Africa, which will host the continent’s premier football competition for the first time.
A Stadium That Will Leave a Lasting Legacy
With construction progressing steadily, excitement is building as Uganda moves closer to unveiling a stadium that will not only showcase the nation’s ability to host world-class events but also leave a lasting legacy for generations to come. As the countdown to AFCON 2027 continues, all eyes remain on Hoima, where a modern football arena is rising to redefine Uganda’s sporting landscape.
