Lugazi FC Turns to Former Crested Cranes Coach Mbekeka After Sempigi's Exit

In a surprising turn, Lugazi FC announced the departure of head coach Sadick Sempigi and appointed former Crested Cranes coach Oliver Mbekeka as his successor. The club issued a statement earlier today confirming the news:

“We would like to express our gratitude to Sempigi for his tireless efforts and services during his time with us, and we wish him all the best in his future coaching endeavors,” the club statement said.

Sempigi’s exit comes after a disappointing start to the Uganda Premier League (UPL) season, where Lugazi FC only managed to secure two points from their first five matches. His team played out draws against Vipers and newly promoted Mbale Heroes, but suffered losses to Maroons, UPDF, and Kitara FC, leaving them struggling at the bottom of the table. Additionally, reports suggest Sempigi faced challenges managing new signings, including Fahad Jumbe, Akram Mbasa, and Bashamu Mugwa, all of whom were expected to make a significant impact.

Sempigi, who was appointed in July 2024 after the club’s promotion to the UPL, had previously worked at Mbarara City, Arua Hill, Onduparaka, and as an assistant to Charles Livingstone Mbabazi. His brief stint at Lugazi has now ended, with the club seeking a fresh start under Mbekeka.

Mbekeka, who joined Lugazi FC as an assistant coach in July, now steps into the head coach role, making history as the first woman to lead a team in the UPL. The club’s chairman, Hajji Abdul Kawuulu, expressed confidence in her abilities:

“Her appointment is very important for the club. We believe she will significantly enhance the team’s performance in the league.”

However, Mbekeka faces an uphill battle as Lugazi FC sits near the relegation zone. Her immediate challenge will be to secure the club’s top-flight status while building a cohesive and competitive team. With her vast experience, including coaching the Crested Cranes U-20 and Lady Doves, Mbekeka brings tactical acumen and leadership to her new role.

Her first test as head coach will be on October 22 when Lugazi hosts Express FC. After that, they will visit NEC on October 30, followed by a home game against Wakiso Giants on November 6. All eyes will be on Mbekeka as she embarks on this historic journey, aiming to steer Lugazi FC to safety and success in the UPL.
