However, the result from South Africa’s draw leaves Uganda needing at least a draw in their penultimate game against South Africa at Namboole Stadium to secure their spot in the prestigious tournament officially.
The Cranes’ path seemed clear after their thrilling win in Juba, where Denis Omedi opened the scoring in the 21st minute with an assist from Allan Okello, followed by an own goal from Alfred Legu after a free kick by Travis Mutyaba in the 66th minute. If South Africa beats Uganda in the Namboole showdown, they will automatically qualify. A win for Congo against South Sudan could see them amass seven points, setting up a potential do-or-die clash with Uganda in Brazzaville. A loss in Brazzaville by a 2-0 margin could level the points and head-to-head records, potentially sending Uganda’s qualification dreams to a penalty shootout.
