The StarTimes Uganda Premier League’s second round kicked off with a bang! SC Villa took on Luzira-based Maroons FC at the Mutesa II stadium, Wankulukuku on Thursday, February 1.

SC Villa, the proud 16-time Uganda league champions, had a solid first half of the season. The Jogoos, as their loyal fans fondly call them, wrapped up the first round in fifth place with 26 points, just seven points shy of BUL FC, who lead the 16-team league.

Their opponents, Maroons, closed the first half with three wins in four matches, holding the fourth spot, a mere two points ahead of the Jogoos. This clash promises to be a nail-biter for neutrals.

But the real showdown of Match Day 16 awaits on Friday night (February 2) at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo. Former champions KCCA FC welcome BUL FC, and it’s a clash worth the wait. KCCA’s recent resurgence, with four wins in their last five matches, has lifted them from the bottom to a respectable ninth position.

BUL, on the other hand, could use the break to steady their ship. They were riding high, with Alex Kitata leading the charge up front and at the back, but signs of nerves in recent matches have allowed Vipers to close in. BUL must now stand strong against the experienced Venoms, with striker Mohammed Shaban and Alex Kitata in the spotlight.

Newcomers Kitara FC have been a revelation and can leapfrog Vipers if they defeat UPDF at Bombo Military Barracks on Saturday, February 3. The defending champions, Vipers, will have to wait until next Thursday to face Gaddafi FC. Coach Livingstone Mbabazi’s arrival has brought new energy to Kitende, but the coaching role at Vipers is known for its revolving door.

Mark your calendars for key second-round dates, especially March 15 when KCCA faces Vipers at St Mary’s Kitende, aiming to avenge last year’s 3-1 defeat. The age-old rivalry between Express and SC Villa on March 9 at Wankulukuku is another must-watch.

On May 1, SC Villa faces KCCA away, while a week later, Vipers hosts Express FC in what promises to be a thrilling showdown. Stay tuned for more exciting football action in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League!
