KAMPALA, July 11 2023 – On World Population Day, July 11, UNICEF recognized and celebrated the progress made by Uganda in effectively managing its population.

“We also advocate for further efforts to balance population growth with the availability of resources, particularly in providing quality care and services for newborns,” a statement issued on Monday reads.

With a population of over 45 million, Uganda is experiencing one of the fastest-growing populations globally, with more than 50 percent of its citizens below the age of 18. It is projected that this number will double by 2040, according to the statement. As the population continues to expand, the needs of children and families will also increase, including access to education, health facilities, clean water, and the protection of the rights of both boys and girls.

Uganda has made significant strides in providing essential services, such as nutrition, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, to its growing population. However, it is crucial to ensure that this population growth is harmonized with the availability of resources at both the family and state levels to ensure the well-being and prospects of every child, the statement said.

On this World Population Day, UNICEF said it is important to emphasize the significance of investing in early childhood development and upholding the rights of every child. By providing comprehensive support during a child’s early years, we establish a strong foundation for their overall well-being and development, enabling them to reach their full potential.

UNICEF commends the Government of Uganda for its commitment and efforts in addressing population challenges. These efforts include the implementation of evidence-based policies and programs that prioritize the health and welfare of its citizens. These initiatives have led to improved maternal and child health outcomes, increased access to education, and expanded employment opportunities, setting the stage for a better future for generations to come.

“We call for continued collaboration between the Government, civil society, and international partners to ensure equitable access to essential services and opportunities for all children, regardless of their background or location,” the statement said. Furthermore, we urge the allocation of adequate resources to prioritize investments in health systems, education, social protection, and livelihood programs that address the unique needs of each child and family.

Uganda has demonstrated its commitment to nurturing its young population, and on this World Population Day, we urge all stakeholders to sustain and build upon these efforts. Together, we can create a future where every child in Uganda receives the care and support they need to thrive, contributing to a happier and more prosperous nation for all boys and girls.
