KAMPALA – The Ugandan government has committed UGX 113 billion ($30 million) to support preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to start on February 1, 2025. As part of the “Pamoja Bid,” Uganda is co-hosting the tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania, a partnership that also includes aspirations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The funding reflects the urgency of Uganda’s readiness for CHAN while laying the groundwork for future international football events.
At a Local Organizing Committee meeting on December 3, 2024, held at Silver Springs Hotel in Kampala, State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, underscored the importance of accountability in managing the funds. “Every dollar must directly contribute to the success of CHAN 2024 and benefit the nation,” Ogwang stated, issuing a stern warning against any misuse of resources.
The tournament, which has confirmed participation from 19 nations, showcases only locally-based players and is seen as a crucial platform for developing football talent across the continent.
Investment in Infrastructure
Dr. Patrick Ogwel, General Secretary of the National Council of Sports (NCS), provided insight into how the allocated funds will be utilized. Key investments include the upgrading of major sports facilities such as Akii Bua Stadium in Lira, Hoima City Stadium, and nine other designated training grounds. Dr. Ogwel assured the public that the Ministry of Finance has committed to releasing funds promptly to enable the timely execution of these projects.
Additionally, modern football technology will take center stage at the tournament, with the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) systems at Uganda’s Namboole Stadium, alongside installations at Kenya’s Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, and Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa and Amaan stadiums in Zanzibar.
Fan Excitement and Anticipation
Football fans in Uganda are enthusiastic about technological advancements. “It’s a dream come true to watch VAR in action right here at Namboole,” said Uganda Cranes supporter Woti Ambrose. “It’s incredible to see how technology is improving the game, and I can’t wait to see it ensure fair decisions during CHAN matches. We also thank the government for the funds allocated.”
Elevating Uganda’s Football Ambitions
The substantial investment demonstrates Uganda’s commitment to not only hosting a successful CHAN tournament but also elevating its status in African football. By upgrading infrastructure and embracing technology, the country is positioning itself as a serious contender in the continental football scene.
As the countdown to CHAN 2024 continues, the focus will remain on ensuring transparency, timely project completion, and readiness to host the tournament in a manner that reflects Uganda’s growing footballing ambitions. This event, alongside preparations for AFCON 2027, represents a golden opportunity to cement Uganda’s reputation as a key player in African football.
