Uganda’s dream of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 remains alive, but a 1-1 draw between South Africa and Congo has delayed what seemed like a sure path to Morocco. The Uganda Cranes’ 2-1 victory against South Sudan on Tuesday placed them at the top of Group K with 10 points, putting them just one point away from securing their first AFCON qualification since 2019 in Egypt. However, the result from South Africa’s draw leaves Uganda needing at least a draw in their penultimate game against South Africa at Namboole Stadium to secure their spot in the prestigious tournament officially.
The Cranes’ path seemed clear after their thrilling win in Juba, where Denis Omedi opened the scoring in the 21st minute with an assist from Allan Okello, followed by an own goal from Alfred Legu after a free kick by Travis Mutyaba in the 66th minute. This result momentarily pushed Uganda to the top of the group, igniting hope that they would easily qualify if South Africa managed a win against Congo. However, the draw in that match has kept the qualification race open.
Moses Magogo, FUFA president, expressed his pride in the team, commending the players for their resilience. “It was not easy, but you fought hard. The #AFCON2025 dream is almost a reality now. Your nation, families, and friends are proud of you. I am hopeful Uganda will qualify for the tournament,” Magogo posted on X (formerly Twitter).
With 10 points and two matches remaining, Uganda leads Group K, followed by South Africa with eight points. The Cranes need only a single point from their upcoming games—against South Africa at home and Congo in Brazzaville—to book their ticket to AFCON 2025. However, the stakes remain high. If South Africa beats Uganda in the Namboole showdown, they will automatically qualify. A win for Congo against South Sudan could see them amass seven points, setting up a potential do-or-die clash with Uganda in Brazzaville. A loss in Brazzaville by a 2-0 margin could level the points and head-to-head records, potentially sending Uganda’s qualification dreams to a penalty shootout.
Uganda’s fans, jubilant after the South Sudan win, are already looking forward to the Namboole fixture against South Africa. Supporters are brimming with confidence, with many praising Coach Paul Put for his tactical acumen. “With the changes he made—bringing in Tadeo Lwanga, Allan Okello, and Derrick Nsibambi—we’re all set to tear South Africa apart next month! The coach knows how to bring out the best in us, and we can’t wait to showcase our talent at Namboole,” said Woti Ambrose, a social work student and ardent Cranes fan.
Fans have taken to social media to rally around the team, urging FUFA to ensure a smooth matchday experience. They’ve called for timely ticket sales, efficient crowd management, and strong security measures to guarantee a safe and enjoyable event for everyone. The anticipation is palpable, with many Ugandans confident that their team will capitalize on home advantage and secure the much-needed result to book their place in Morocco.
With Uganda on the brink of AFCON qualification, all eyes now turn to Namboole Stadium, where the Cranes will face South Africa in what could be a historic match. Fans and players alike are ready for the challenge, hopeful that the nation’s AFCON dream will soon be realized.
