The battle for the StarTimes Uganda Premier League crown went to the wire after Tuesday’s penultimate round games ended with SC Villa taking a slim two-point lead over SC Vipers SC and KCCA FC in the three-horse title race.
SC Villa, who are seeking to end the 19-year league title drought, opened up the two-point lead on top of the table standings after beating Blacks Power FC 1-0 on Tuesday, May 23.
Top marksman Charles Bbaale scored the lone winner at the Muteesa II stadium Wankulukuku for Villa to assume the top spot with 52 points from 27 games.
On the same afternoon, second-placed Vipers and third-placed KCCA stuttered after drawing 1-1 and 0-0 with BUL FC and Busoga United respectively.
That means Vipers and KCCA are tied on 50 points apiece but separated by goal difference, with the former on 22 and the latter on 16.

Tuesday’s results set the tone for the final round of games due on Saturday, May 27. It will be a winner takes-it-all situation for Villa, who host former champions URA FC at Wankulukuku.
The Jogoos, who still hold the record of winning most league titles at 16, last won the league in 2004.
For Vipers, the chances of retaining the league title are not entirely in their hands. But the Venoms must beat Busoga United at Kitende in the last game of the season and pray that Villa and KCCA lose their matches on the same day.
On the other hand, KCCA will be out to defeat Bright Stars at Lugogo and pray that both Villa and Vipers lose their games.
TUESDAY’S RESULTS: SC Villa 1 BlacksPower 0; BUL 1 Vipers 1; BusogaUnited 0 KCCA 0; URA 4 Gaddafi FC 0; Bright Stars 0 Arua Hill 1
