KAMPALA – In a significant display of its growing stature on the international stage, Uganda is set to host the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the South Summit in January 2024. The NAM Summit, running from January 15–23, and the South Summit, from January 21–24, will be held at the Commonwealth Speke Resort, Munyonyo. This was confirmed in a recent Cabinet press release.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has updated the Cabinet on the nation’s preparedness for these high-profile summits. Assuring the country of readiness, the cabinet announced that several countries have confirmed their participation. The Organizing Committee, led by Ms. Lucy Nakyobe, the Head of Civil Service and Secretary to Cabinet, is diligently ensuring that all infrastructure and facilities are ready by December 30, 2023. These preparations encompass airport facilities, VIP transportation, security, road access to summit venues, accommodation, hotel inspections, entertainment, and communication.
Ugandans are called upon to showcase their renowned hospitality to the numerous international guests attending the summits. Regular updates on the preparations will be provided.
In addition to these summits, Uganda is also set to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day on December 6, 2023, at Hotel Africana. This year’s theme, “Strengthening Partnerships in the War Against Corruption,” emphasizes collective action in combating corruption. The event is scheduled ahead of the designated global observance on December 9 due to other national commitments. Various activities are being conducted by anti-corruption agencies, state, and non-state actors to raise public awareness and encourage active participation in this crucial fight.
Moreover, Uganda will host the East African Magistrates and Judges Association (EAMJA) Conference from December 5-8, 2023, at Speke Resort Munyonyo. EAMJA, comprising judicial bodies from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia, aims to promote the rule of law and access to justice in East Africa. The conference will focus on “Harmonizing Best Judicial Practices in East Africa Judiciaries to Ease Access to Justice.”
Finally, the Cabinet noted the 6th Training on Chemical Emergency Response, Planning, and Management for East African Community Partner States. Scheduled from December 13-14, 2023, at the Uganda Rapid Development Capability Center in Jinja, this training is part of Uganda’s commitment to chemical safety.
