MAKERERE: Tusiime Miika’s journey began in Ntungamo district, western Uganda, where he was born into a humble family as the third of six children. Raised by supportive parents, Miika faced significant challenges from an early age due to his disability, which caused frequent fractures whenever he slipped or stepped on wet surfaces. “It was such a hard time in my childhood,” he recalls. “I would get fractures whenever I slipped or stepped on wet surfaces.” “I would crawl like a baby until I gained momentum to walk again,” he said.
Despite these difficulties, Miika’s determination shone through. He vividly remembers his younger sister pushing him to school in a wheelchair, making him a regular latecomer. Even so, his academic brilliance was evident, earning eight aggregates in primary seven, twenty-seven at UCE, and fourteen points at UACE. These achievements secured him a government-sponsored spot at Makerere University to study for a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and Film under the Disability Scheme.
Passion for Music and Drama
Entertainment has always been Miika’s driving force. Initially aspiring to study journalism and communication, he shifted to Drama and Film due to admission requirements, finding the field equally aligned with his passion. His love for music, drama, and entertainment led him to conceptualize a radio station.
“I started with podcasts and researched ways to expand. I remember beginning with just one microphone—a V8 sound card and its mic,” he shared. This vision culminated in the birth of Infinity Radio, an online station that has since become a hub for Makerere University students, particularly those studying journalism, to host shows.
Known as “Short Legend,” Miika is also a musician whose songs have earned him popularity within the Makerere community. Regularly called upon to perform at university events, he dreams of establishing an online TV channel, a project he has already set in motion.
The Birth of Infinity Radio
Infinity Radio started as a modest operation but grew as Miika sourced funds to purchase mixers, microphones, and launch an online streaming platform. The station, now based in his room at Makerere University’s Mitchell Hall, continues to grow despite challenges such as high data costs.
“My goal is to make Infinity Radio the biggest digital radio platform, empowering people with disabilities and amplifying youth voices,” Miika emphasized.
Leadership Aspirations
Miika’s leadership journey began in high school and has flourished at Makerere University. Elected Guild Representative Councilor (GRC) for students with disabilities earlier this year, he now aims for the position of Secretary for Information and Publicity in the upcoming Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) elections.
A Vision Beyond Disability
Miika’s resilience and vision underscore his belief that disability is no barrier to success. From his groundbreaking radio station to his aspirations of becoming a top radio personality, Miika embodies determination and intentionality, inspiring others to overcome life’s challenges.
