Frank Muteganga scored the decisive goal as Makerere University kicked off their 2024/25 Pepsi University Football League (UFL) campaign with a 1-0 win over Victoria University on Thursday evening. Muteganga found the net in the 17th minute, expertly heading in Herbert Wasswa’s free kick to give Makerere the lead at the Makerere University playgrounds.
The narrow victory over Victoria University is expected to provide a confidence boost for Makerere, who are chasing their second UFL title, having last won the league in 2012. Despite controlling much of the match, Coach Williams Kasozi’s side struggled to capitalize on several scoring opportunities due to poor finishing from their forwards.
Victoria University, who debuted in the UFL last season, faced another setback in their pursuit of a strong start to the competition. Their defensive efforts managed to limit the damage to just one goal, but their attack failed to make an impact.
Makerere University is competing in Group B alongside Victoria University, Ndejje University, and Kumi University. Other groups in this season’s UFL feature a competitive lineup of teams from across the country, including Nkumba University, Uganda Martyrs University, and Makerere University Business School (MUBS) among others.
Makerere’s win sets them off on the right foot as they aim to reclaim the UFL crown and build momentum in the group stage of the prestigious annual tournament.
