Local football governing body, FUFA, has sacked Uganda Cranes’ head coach Milutin Micho Sredojevic following the team’s recent failure to qualify for the Africa Cup Nations (AFCON) Finals.
In a statement issued Thursday (September 14) night, FUFA spokesman Ahmed Hussein stated that the federation agreed with Micho to ‘mutually end the existing employment contract between the two parties.’
“FUFA appreciates all efforts and commitment by Mr. Milutin during his period as Head coach of Uganda Cranes,” Hussein added.
No immediate replacement was named for Micho, who returned to the Cranes’ job in 2021 for the second stint. In his second tenure, Micho oversaw Cranes’ failed campaigns to qualify for the Chan (2022) and AFCON (2023) Finals. In his first tenure, Micho guided the Cranes to the 2017 AFCON Finals and ended the country’s 39-year absence at the continental showpiece.
The Cranes play their next games in November as they kick off the campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Accordingly FUFA is expected to name Micho’s successor in the coming few weeks.
Meanwhile, FUFA appointed former Uganda Cranes’ coach Abdallah Mubiru as assistant coach of the senior women’s football team, the Crested Cranes. Mubiru will work with Ayub Khalifan Kiyingi, the acting head coach of all women’s national football teams to prepare the Crested Cranes for an upcoming AFCON qualifier against Algeria.
