NDA Assures Public: ARV Levels in Pork, Chicken Pose No Risk

Kampala, September 7, 2023 – Our scientific analysis has shown that the ARV contamination levels in animal feeds are far too low to be of any substantial public health concern. This means there’s no reason for panic or alarm, the National Drug Authority (NDA) said to calm fears triggered by recent media reports about alleged ARV contamination in animal feeds.

To set the record straight, NDA said it is authorized to regulate human pharmaceutical drugs. The oversight of food safety and animal feeds falls outside its mandate.

In its statement, the authority said it became aware of recent studies citing ARV contamination in animal feeds and products such as chicken and pork via media reports. These findings were not part of any internal research or report from the NDA.

On learning the allegations, NDA carried out an in-depth investigation and scientific review, which found that the levels of ARVs in the reported animal feeds and products are too negligible to pose any public health risk, thereby negating the need for alarm.

In response to the findings, the NDA initiated multiple interventions. “These include rigorous enforcement operations aimed at identifying and halting the unauthorized use of ARVs and other drugs in animals. These enforcement measures have already resulted in several arrests, with legal proceedings underway against the individuals involved,” the statement said.

“In conclusion, the media reports concerning this issue are misleading and do not capture the full context of NDA’s role or actions. The NDA remains unwavering in its commitment to ensure the safety, efficacy, and quality of medicines for Ugandans,” the statement said.

Beyond Kyankwanzi Lies Uganda’s Next Public Service Revolution

By Kalikumutima DeoJune 19, 20260

Uganda has spent decades developing policies and reform strategies, but citizens judge government differently—by whether services are delivered efficiently and fairly. A new commentary argues that the country’s next phase of transformation must focus on faster service delivery, accountability, meritocracy and a citizen-first culture if public trust and economic growth are to improve.
