GOMBA –In a statement issued July 7, President Museveni, addressed the outcome of the Oyam by-elections and emphasized the need for fair and transparent electoral processes. Congratulating the winner, Eunice Apio of the UPC party, and recognizing the narrow margin between the UPC and NRM candidate, Engola Junior, the President called for adherence to legal channels if any wrongdoing is suspected.
Expressing concern over reports of ballot tampering and urging swift action against those involved, the President strongly condemned such acts, labeling them as treasonous. He highlighted the Opposition’s alleged involvement in similar incidents in Kampala and criticized the NRM officials for their failure to apprehend the perpetrators. Stressing the importance of genuine voter participation and influence in choosing candidates and political parties, the President underlined the fundamental role of citizens in shaping their own future and ensuring the accountability of their leaders.
To prevent malpractices such as vote rigging, bribery, violence, and misinformation, the President advocated for the implementation of electronic voting using thumbprints. This approach would enhance transparency and eliminate pre-ticking of ballots, a practice that undermines the integrity of elections. The President acknowledged the positive conduct of UPC and DP in recent years and encouraged both parties to reflect on the historical mistakes that hindered the formation of a broad-based political force capable of guaranteeing peace and stability, as seen in Tanzania’s Tanu and Afro-Shirazi parties.
Furthermore, the President emphasized the need for individuals, particularly in the journalism and media sectors, to adapt and acquire new skills, especially in relation to software and quantitative methods. He highlighted the rising importance of data literacy in various professions and urged students and professionals to embrace quantitative methods to enhance problem-solving abilities and foster innovation. The President called for a shift in focus from sterile politics aimed at gaining popularity through financial aid and attending public events, to a more productive emphasis on wealth creation and development.
The President expressed concern about the lack of diversified agricultural activities in Oyam and called for increased engagement in sectors such as coffee, fruits, poultry, piggery, dairy, and fish farming. The President pledged to revisit Oyam in August to address the issues raised and assess the progress of Operation Wealth Creation in the region. He also underscored the importance of preserving wetlands for irrigation purposes and discouraged encroachment on these valuable resources.
Ending his statement, the President mentioned his upcoming broadcast on anti-terrorism and crime prevention. He provided updates on his current activities, including his presence in Kisozi, where he is attending to his cattle. The President acknowledged the recent passing of a prominent supporter and economic actor, Aponye, offering condolences to the family and all Ugandans.
