CAF Champions League
Friday, March 31@7pm:
Horoya v Vipers
Uganda champions Vipers seek to end their debut in the CAF Champions League group stage on a high note when they play Horoya AC on Friday, March 31 in Bamako, Mali.
Only pride is at stake for Vipers, who are already out of this year’s competition.
In their recent match, Vipers drew 1-1 with Morocco giants Raja Casablanca (on March 18) but had already dropped out after earlier humiliating losses to Raja (0-5) and Tanzania’s Simba SC, who beat the Venoms 1-0 at home and in Dar es Salaam.
Despite the draw, Vipers remain bottom of Group C with just two points from five matches. Group leaders, Raja, with 13 points and second-placed Simba SC (on nine points from five games) have already qualified for the quarterfinals. Horoya of Guinea Conakry has four points in third place.
Club coach Alex Isabirye, who replaced Brazilian Beto Bianchi earlier this month, said they will be all out to secure victory in Bamako. In the first leg, Vipers drew 0-0 with Horoya at Kitende.
“After drawing with Raja, we want to follow up with victory for motivation as we prepare for upcoming league and Uganda Cup games. There is also pride at stake for country we represent,” Isabirye said on Thursday, March 30.
Isabirye has been tasked to defend the StarTimes Uganda Premier League title and win the Uganda Cup to salvage the Venoms’ season.
