KAMPALA: Thousands of mourners from diverse walks of life gathered at the newly constructed Mbogo Mosque in Kawempe North constituency to pay their last respects to Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, a leader cherished for his humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his constituents. Muslims, Christians, religious leaders, politicians, and journalists were among those who came to honor the man fondly known for his selfless service.
By 10 a.m., the neighborhoods of Kawempe Tula, Mbogo, Kyebando, and Mpelerwe were alive with activity as mourners flocked to the mosque. The day’s somber proceedings began with Jumah prayers led by the local imam, who reflected on a Quranic verse about mortality. “Every soul shall taste death. God, who took Ssegirinya, has a reason for it,” he said, urging the congregation to honor the late legislator by continuing his legacy of helping the needy. “Ssegirinya lived a life of sacrifice. Let us follow his example by supporting the less privileged.”
A Leader Remembered
Kampala Lord Mayor Hajji Erias Lukwago delivered a scathing critique of the judiciary and President Museveni, holding them accountable for what he termed the mistreatment of Ssegirinya during his illness. Lukwago criticized the denial of bail despite medical recommendations for urgent treatment, describing it as a “grave injustice.” He further condemned President Museveni’s directive on denying bail to prisoners, calling it a violation of human rights. “We must stand united as a constituency to honor Ssegirinya’s memory by electing a strong representative who reflects his values,” Lukwago implored.
Hon. Asuman Basalirwa, MP for Bugiri Municipality, praised fellow parliamentarians for their collective decision to contribute UGX 300,000 each to support Ssegirinya’s family. The initiative is expected to raise UGX 150 million. “This unprecedented act shows the respect we have for Ssegirinya’s legacy,” Basalirwa noted, also commending the Speaker of Parliament for pledging to support Ssegirinya’s daughter, Aliyah Nagirinya, through her education. He further thanked the people of Kawempe for their love and care for Ssegirinya during his illness.
A Broad Political Presence
The funeral was attended by numerous political figures, including Fred Nyanzi, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP) President; Allan Ssewanyana, MP for Makindye West; and Muwada Nkunyinji, MP for Kyadondo East. Others included Mpindi Bumaali, MP for the disabled; Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, MP for Butambala and chairperson of the Buganda Caucus; Zahara Ruyirika, KCCA Speaker; Hajji Latif Ssebaggala Ssengendo, former area MP; and Joseph Ssewungu, MP for Kalungu West.
