KAMPALA – Buddu clinched their third Masaza Cup title in style, edging out Kyaggwe in an exhilarating final that added a new chapter to their legacy in the tournament since its revival in 2004.
Returning to Namboole Stadium after five years, the final brought electrifying energy back to the fans. The Kabaka’s arrival, welcomed by Kattikiro Charles Peter Mayega, sparked a stadium-wide cheer, setting the stage for an unforgettable match as fans gathered to celebrate this marquee event together.
Kyaggwe came out strong, controlling much of the game and lifting the hopes of their fans with a powerful midfield led by star player Geoffrey Ggagganga. Yet Buddu’s experience and tactical prowess allowed them to capitalize on key moments. In the 22nd minute, Captain Pius Ssebulime delivered a brilliant cross that Mike Welaga met with a perfect header, sending the stands into a frenzy.
Both teams emerged from halftime fired up, with Buddu focused on defending their lead and Kyaggwe pushing hard for an equalizer. Kyaggwe made critical substitutions, bringing on Hakim Lule to boost their attack. Their golden opportunity came in the 63rd minute when Ofoyrwoth Isaac crossed to Nyalimo Steven, whose powerful header struck the crossbar, raising a roar of hope from the crowd.
Buddu’s defensive resilience, however, proved too strong, and they held on to secure their third trophy. With this victory, Buddu joins Mawokota in the three-title club, while Gomba remains the tournament’s most successful team with five titles. Coach Simon Ddunga marked his second Masaza Cup championship, adding this victory to his 2017 title win with Gomba.
In the third-place match, Buweekula showcased their prowess with a 3-1 win over Kyadondo. Buluuli’s Ssewanyana Robert claimed the Golden Boot with seven goals, while Buweekula’s Munogela Amour earned the Most Valuable Player award for his exceptional performance throughout the tournament.
Adding a touch of political presence, notable leaders, including Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago, Parliamentary Commissioner Mathias Mpuuga, and National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, attended the event. Their support highlighted the intersection of sports and leadership, as fans celebrated both the thrilling game and the engagement of these influential figures in championing local talent and sportsmanship.
